Kano Govt. Boosts Youth with Skills, Tools and Jobs in Big Employment Push
In a big step to fight youth unemployment, the Kano State Government has empowered more than 2,000 young graduates with tools, training support and startup funds. The initiative, launched at the Government House in Kano, is designed to help young people turn their skills into real opportunities and build financially independent lives.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf led the event, emphasizing the state’s commitment to growing a self-reliant and economically strong youth population. He also reiterated his administration’s ambitious goal of creating 50,000 jobs for young people — many of which are planned for rollout in 2026.

More than 2,260 young people who recently completed training at eight revived entrepreneurship and vocational institutes received support. These institutes had been neglected for several years before being restored by the current government.

The graduates were trained in a wide range of practical skills tailored to today’s economy, including digital technology, agriculture, creative arts, journalism and more.

Here’s a breakdown of the skills areas covered:
Digital & Tech Skills — Through the Informatics Institute, 750 young people learned computer programming, phone repairs, CCTV installation, solar energy technology and digital processing.
Horticulture & Landscaping — Another 750 trainees learned techniques in plantation care and landscaping — skills that support green businesses and urban renewal.
Professional Driving — The Driving Institute trained 750 drivers in safe driving practices and traffic rules to boost road safety and job readiness.
Livestock & Fisheries — Hundreds completed programmes focused on livestock management and fish farming to help strengthen food systems and rural livelihoods.
Creative Arts & Media — The Film Institute and Development Journalism Institute gave hands-on training in storytelling, content creation and credible media practice.
Poultry Farming — A group of 600 women completed a poultry programme aimed at improving food production and supporting rural incomes.

Along with certificates, graduates received tools and starter kits relevant to their fields — like laptops, agricultural equipment, phone repair kits, tablets and professional driving certificates. Each participant also received a cash grant, with driving trainees receiving slightly higher support.

Governor Yusuf described the programme as an investment in human potential, saying it helps tackle poverty, youth restiveness and unemployment while supporting broader national development goals.

He also announced progress on other fronts, like resolving outstanding tuition debts for students studying abroad, allowing them to finally receive their certificates. Additionally, he reaffirmed promises of automatic job placement for graduates in fields like medicine, engineering and allied health sciences after completing their national service.

The Commissioner for Finance and chair of the entrepreneurship steering committee praised the programme’s potential long-term economic benefits, noting how well-targeted training and support can help young people become productive contributors to the state’s growth.
