Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has presented a landmark ₦1.368 trillion proposed budget for the 2026 fiscal year to the Kano State House of Assembly, describing it as a bold and people-oriented spending plan aimed at accelerating development across the state.

The budget, tagged as a development-driven budget, is the largest in Kano State’s history and reflects the government’s determination to invest heavily in sectors that directly impact the lives of citizens. According to the governor, the 2026 budget is structured to promote economic growth, social welfare, job creation, and environmental sustainability.

Out of the total sum, about 68 percent is allocated to capital expenditure, while 32 percent is set aside for recurrent expenditure, showing a strong focus on long-term development projects rather than routine spending.

Key Sectors Covered in the 2026 Budget

Education

Education takes a central place in the 2026 budget, with significant funding earmarked for the renovation and construction of schools, recruitment and training of teachers, provision of learning materials, and support for higher institutions. The government aims to improve access to quality education and reduce the number of out-of-school children across the state.

Health

The health sector is also a major priority. Funds are allocated for upgrading hospitals, strengthening primary healthcare centres, purchasing medical equipment, and improving maternal and child healthcare services. The budget also targets better healthcare access for rural communities and vulnerable groups.

Youth Development and Employment

Recognising the importance of Kano’s youthful population, the budget makes provision for youth empowerment programmes, skills acquisition, vocational training, entrepreneurship support, and job creation initiatives. These programmes are expected to reduce unemployment and encourage self-reliance among young people.

Sports and Social Development

The 2026 budget includes funding for sports development, rehabilitation of sports facilities, and talent development programmes aimed at nurturing young athletes. Social welfare initiatives designed to support women, children, and persons with disabilities are also captured in the budget.

Infrastructure and Works

A large portion of the capital expenditure is dedicated to infrastructure development, including road construction and rehabilitation, bridges, urban renewal projects, and public transportation improvements. These projects are expected to boost economic activities and improve connectivity across the state.

Agriculture and Food Security

Agriculture receives strong attention through funding for farmer support programmes, irrigation schemes, provision of farm inputs, and mechanisation. The goal is to enhance food production, improve farmers’ incomes, and ensure food security in Kano State.

Environment and Climate Action

The environment sector is not left out, with allocations for waste management, drainage construction, flood control, tree planting, and climate-resilience projects. These efforts are aimed at creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for residents.

Commerce, Industry, and Investment

The budget also supports economic diversification through investments in commerce and industry, including the development of the Kano Economic City. This initiative is expected to attract investors, boost internally generated revenue, and create employment opportunities.

Governor Yusuf assured the House that transparency, accountability, and prudent financial management would guide the implementation of the budget. He called on lawmakers to give the proposal prompt and thorough consideration in the interest of Kano citizens.

Members of the Kano State House of Assembly welcomed the budget presentation and pledged to work closely with the executive to ensure the final budget reflects the needs and aspirations of the people.

If passed, the ₦1.368 trillion 2026 budget is expected to significantly improve public services, stimulate economic growth, empower youths, and place Kano State on a stronger path toward sustainable development.
