FG Approves ₦1 Trillion Metro Rail Project for Kano
The Federal Government has approved a ₦1 trillion metropolitan rail project for Kano State, marking a major milestone in efforts to modernize urban transportation and reduce traffic congestion in the ancient city.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf announced the approval on Thursday while addressing members of the Kano delegation who participated in the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition held in Borno State. According to the governor, the proposed metro rail system is designed to provide residents with a modern, reliable, and affordable means of transportation across major areas of the Kano metropolis.
Speaking through his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, the governor described the project as more than just a transportation initiative. He said the rail service is expected to stimulate economic activities, attract investment, create jobs, and significantly improve the quality of life of Kano residents. The project, he added, will also strengthen Kano’s position as a major commercial and transportation hub in Northern Nigeria.
Governor Yusuf further assured that the Kano State Government will collaborate closely with relevant federal agencies to ensure the smooth and transparent execution of the project. He expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for approving the initiative and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to policies and infrastructure development that support sustainable growth.
If successfully completed, the Kano Metro Rail project is expected to play a key role in easing urban congestion, improving mobility, and transforming daily commuting for millions of residents across the state.
