Communications Ministry Records ₦822.53bn Budget Allocation in Six Years
Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has enjoyed a steady rise in funding over the last six years, receiving a combined ₦822.53 billion between 2021 and 2026. This increase highlights the growing importance of digital infrastructure, innovation, and technology in Nigeria’s development agenda.
A closer look at the figures shows how government attention to the communications sector has evolved. In 2021, the ministry received just ₦39.47 billion, reflecting a period when digital transformation was still gaining momentum. However, by 2022, the allocation jumped significantly to ₦159.87 billion, representing an increase of over 400 percent. This sharp rise signaled a clear policy shift towards strengthening ICT and digital services nationwide.
The upward trend continued in the following years, with funding supporting key agencies under the ministry such as NCC, NITDA, Galaxy Backbone, and NIPOST. These agencies play critical roles in expanding broadband access, improving digital governance, promoting tech innovation, and modernising postal and communication services across the country.
The most dramatic increase came in 2025, when the ministry’s budget surged to ₦463.57 billion — more than the total allocation received in the previous four years combined. This massive boost reflected the federal government’s push for accelerated digitalisation, improved connectivity, cybersecurity development, and support for Nigeria’s growing tech ecosystem.
For 2026, the proposed allocation stands at ₦84.56 billion, captured in the federal government’s “Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity.” President Bola Ahmed Tinubu explained that the 2026 budget is designed to consolidate ongoing reforms while strengthening critical sectors that can drive economic growth and job creation.
Industry experts believe sustained investment in the communications and digital economy sector will help Nigeria:
Expand internet and broadband penetration
Create more digital and tech-related jobs
Improve government service delivery through e-governance
Support startups, innovation hubs, and local tech talent
Strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global digital economy
Overall, the ₦822.53 billion investment over six years reflects a strong commitment by the federal government to position communications and digital innovation as key pillars of national development. As Nigeria continues its digital journey, stakeholders hope future budgets will focus not only on funding but also on effective implementation and measurable impact for citizens.
