1. Religious Career and Scholarship

Dr. Tanshi served as the Chief Imam of the Dutsen Tanshi Juma’at Mosque in Bauchi and was recognized for his deep knowledge of Islamic teachings, particularly within the Salafi tradition. He studied at prestigious universities in Saudi Arabia, earning distinctions in Islamic scholarship. His sermons during Ramadan and other religious events attracted large followings, though his style was often divisive. Critics accused him of using harsh rhetoric, publicly insulting other scholars (e.g., Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi and Prof. Pantami), and labeling opposing sects as "kafirai" (non-believers).  

2. Legal Controversies and Imprisonment

Dr. Tanshi faced multiple legal challenges:  

- Blasphemy Charges (2023): In May 2023, he was arrested and remanded in prison by a Bauchi magistrate court for allegedly making blasphemous statements against the Prophet Muhammad during a Ramadan sermon. This led to widespread outcry and demands for his prosecution.  

- Contempt of Court (2024): In February 2024, the Bauchi State Police declared him wanted for failing to appear in court over charges of inciting public disturbance. A bench warrant was issued, and a reward was offered for his arrest.  

- Exile and Return: He briefly fled Nigeria but returned in April 2024 after mediation by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, which reportedly reconciled him with the Bauchi State government.  

3. Political Involvements

Dr. Tanshi was politically active, openly criticizing and endorsing candidates. During the 2019 and 2023 elections, he opposed the PDP-led state government and supported APC candidates, including former Air Chief Marshal Baba Sadiq. This drew retaliation from political opponents, with some alleging his imprisonment was politically motivated. His criticism of governance and alignment with opposition groups exacerbated tensions with state authorities.  

4. Business Ventures

Beyond theology, Dr. Tanshi engaged in entrepreneurship and agriculture, reflecting a broader trend among Nigerian Islamic scholars to pursue economic independence. 5. Illness and Death

Dr. Tanshi had been battling a prolonged, undisclosed illness. He traveled to India for treatment in early 2025 but returned to Bauchi when his condition worsened. He passed away on April 4, 2025, and his funeral prayers were held the following day at the Dutsen Tanshi Mosque.
